Considering his brilliant theory of evolution I still find it weird that stories about a deathbed conversion still get written about ~ recently found a book down my local bookstore written by some Brit historian who claims that Darwin basically renounced his theory and.........seriously it read like something written by a doped horse

The story was invented by the so-called "Lady Hope"- who was not around at his deathbed, nor was it confirmed by any of his close relatives. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabet…

(Of course, even if he renounced it, it would still be true...)

Thanks for the link, have since found a downloadable copy of  "Life & Letters of Charles Darwin Vol 1" on www.archive.org better to have a source from the horse's mouth ~ he was a decent gent although a conflicted agnostic, apparently he had to cover theology/divinity at college ~ having been at a school which had it's own seminary for priest training I know how frigging depressing that can be.

Funnily enough he was a theologian originally, before he started on the natural sciences. He later turned atheist after the death of his daughter; calling him merely "agnostic" is insufficient IMHO. (Agnosticism is not in any way incompatible with atheism; it is actually a natural ally to it)

he was a very good writer on science, when he introduced his theory he made sure to name check a number of thinkers who had been following a similar line of thought like Alfred Wallace etc. and was very good at explaining it in terms a layperson could understand.

Darwin was a decent guy to fellow scientists, I was always impressed at how he helped out Wallace by getting him a small pension for his contribution to science, unlike many other scientists Wallace wasn't gentry or had Ye Olde Family Fortune to fall back on, he had to make cash by selling off samples of the flora and fauna he collected on expedition ~ when the hell are we going to have a "Darwin Day"?

Yeah, by all accounts he was a good scientist and a decent human being.

Turns out there is one. I guess it isn't very widely known. I also know he was on the 10 pound bank note in the UK, from 2000-2017.

They've even tried it with Christopher Hitchens, who wrote a book as he lay dying which ridiculed the notion. Shameless. If you have to lie to further your narrative...

What a shameless ghoul, that pastor who wrote a book claiming that he had (while offering no tangible evidence, of course). Parasites.

I wonder how far in advance of any given famous atheist's death these books are actually written. I imagine some of these people have a collection of pre-fabricated deathbed conversion books just waiting to be distributed to Christian bookstores and websites.

That would honestly not surprise me at all. Religion is a hell of a business, and there's money to be made smearing your opposition. Like goodly, morally upright people would do, of course.

But yanno, he was totally aiming to create a nihilistic, ungodly proto-nazist ideology. Because that's 100% what evolution is about.

(I wish that was just sarcasm, but I've encountered fundies who actually believe this)

Most religious people seriously seem to not even know the first thing about Our Prophet Darwin, Peace Be Upon Him.
