The Circular Plea of Conspiracism by AmericanDreaming The Circular Plea of Conspiracism by AmericanDreaming
From "Voodoo Histories: The Role of the Conspiracy Theory in Shaping Modern History" (2009) by David Aaronovitch.  See my review here.

If evidence of a cover-up is evidence of a cover-up, and anything even remotely resembling evidence of a cover-up is also evidence of a cover-up, and no evidence of a cover-up is also evidence of a cover-up, then perhaps you would revise your standards of evidence. Just a thought.

WOAH MAN :icontrippy-plz:
Cover-upseception.

But we all know the one true conspiracy here. Jews did 9/11. They made the media and entertainment industry do it and they dressed up in masks and costumes. Tru fax 100%

My favorite version of this conspiracy theory is the one that proposes there were no planes at all, that they were some kind of holographic projections.

One of my faves is the theory where people argue that steel beams can't be melted and the 9/11 explosion was a government demolition with a fake giant plane prop.

And when people explain the science behind it and show that they are incorrect, they persist in their fantasy. People think a skeptic questions everything. They do; and they also follow the evidence. Questioning everything but not following the evidence is not skepticism.

There are so many holes in that theory as well that it's just crazy.

Where did all the people who perished in the 9/11 attack go? Over two thousand people died or something, and the government would have to hide them all so that the public didn't know. Where the fuck are they? Area 5-fucking-1?
Why would the government not think about somehow blowing up the tower so that people wouldn't contract lung cancer or die from the fumes would eventually die too?
How would it not be fucking obvious? Is the government in America really so competent that there'd be no evidence of a set up? I doubt it, considering how Bush and co. talked publically about how they just waved off those inconvenient papers warning them about 9/11 basically, and Bush was making out with the Saudi princes whenever he could.
Are you telling me that planes full of burning hot combustible fuel really can't melt steel? What is welding brah? What is smithery? What is love, baby don't hurt me...
Where did the planes go? Where and how did people make such a realistic plane "prop"?
Why would the American government have anything to gain from killing all of the people in the Twin Towers?
Why would Al Queda say they were planning a terrorist attack similar to the one that ended up happen, on American commercial airliners?

Aliens and lasers!
Even if it were a "conspiracy..." I don't think enough people care. Just my humble opinion.

That's kinda stupid though. It's far more likely that what really happened happened. There's more evidence for the official pattern of events. People thinking that it didn't really happen don't help anything.

Besides CNN said it was true and they wouldn't lie, and of course it really happens all this conspiracy stuff is just nonsense, I don't understand how people could not believe Lee Harvey Oswald killed Kennedy. Occam's Razor my Viking pal! :) And ISIS hates us and wants to destroy our democracy... they suck!

The "answers" to those questions fluctuates depending on the specific version of the theory in question. The earliest versions of this conspiracy theory surfaced on the internet within hours of the attack.

I remember seeing a news feature right after it where two insane fundie Christian clowns said that gays and gay rights, promiscuous people, abortionists, liberals and atheists made the attack possible because the more progressive outlook in America in the early 2000s made God mad at the US :iconquadruplefacepalmplz:

The government: Capable of completely controlling all data, all information, at all times knowing everything in order to spin their ruthless, authoritarian narrative. Have every scientist ever in their pocket.

Also the government: Can't stop mid-level employees in their security branches from leaking critical data.

It's interesting how every actual conspiracy is filled with leakers or were outright admitted to after the fact. The Manhattan Project, Watergate, The Tuskegee experiments, NSA surveillance, Trump and Russia, etc.

Yet probably the most defining moment of the start of the 21st century which as the quote points out would require thousands of people cooperating on it, have ever come out and say that the whole thing was a planned inside job.

Exactly. I find that far too many people are what I would call conspiracy illiterate. They cannot differentiate a conspiracy like Watergate from 9/11 truth. If anything, they use the former as evidence for the latter, arguing - illogically - that because some conspiracies have been proven to have occurred, then it is reasonable to believe in any given theory, regardless of evidence, did occur.

By and large I agree. However there also is a part of my brain that dissents because I know for a fact that much of what is said and people believe to be truth is NOT true.

Example. ~Dunno if you remember back in the 80's when there was this huge guerrilla warfare thing going on in El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua & Colombia  Mostly done by a group called FARC.   ( Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia )
Now This was in all the news papers and news shows until one fine day all of a sudden it ... wasn't.
No explanation was ever given.
No one even noticed it's absence cuz none ever talked about it again.( except for minor places that were easily brushed off and ignored)
Ironically ( or coincidentally ) A regiment of the 82 Airborne Division went on an extended training mission that was called a TDY ( Temp detached duty) in an "undisclosed Location with our allies".
I was with the 82 Airborne at that time.
Sadly enough there were casualties taken from that training exercise.  And shortly after the unit returned to Ft Bragg and nothing more was said about it's TDY or was FARC ever doing anything "major" again.
I cannot say what happened in either case of why FARC went very silent or where and what my/that unit did in it's TDY or even if the two are interrelated or not..
I can only say whats officially on the record.
PFC Huffman earned his C.I.B. ( Combat Infantryman Badge  ) during that TDY time.
I CAN quote Wiki on about the C.I.B. ~ " The badge is awarded to infantrymen and Special Forces soldiers in the rank of colonel and below, who personally fought in active ground combat while assigned as members of either an infantry, ranger or Special Forces unit, of brigade size or smaller, any time after 6 December 1941."

You are free to speculate as you wish. And who knows while you might be wrong you also might be right as well.

At the end of the day, sure, people are free to believe as they wish, and there's nothing inherently wrong with speculating, but it does come down to evidence. If there is evidence, a conspiracy will be accepted, and there are a number of accepted historical conspiracies.

That's an interesting autobiographical tidbit there.  It is generally well-known that militaries take part in secret or classified activity that doesn't get out, or is spun. Incidents like that may at some points intersect with conspiracies, but I would argue they are two different things.

Yes there are a lot of things Military folks do that never makes the news or if it does is not even close to the truth ( most recent was Bengazi) and that secrecy and spin is what causes a lack of trust in "The Truth"  being true. or if you want a historical (comedic) reference. The main newspaper of the Soviet union was called Pravda Which is Russian means truth... And was the official newspaper of the communist party.. Thats the kind of "truth" that make sfolks go Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

Yes it does come down to being able to generate and show facts.
I'll give my example on the Kennedy assassination.
I do not have any facts that say Oswald killed Kennedy. I do have two facts that I feel disprove that he was the sole/only person involved.
1 . The route was changed to take JFK by the book depository. ~ This is sorta key since IF LHO was gonna pop JFK from the book storage unless the route was change he would have had no shot on the original routing. So if he had no shot why bring a gun to shoot with? That doesnt make a bit of sense no matter how loopie someone is.
2. He could not have made the shot(s) ~ I know lots of folks have done lots of research into what and how the shots were made. and I rank him being able to pull the shots off on the same order of aliens from Andromeda dropping by my place for tea. yes it COULD happen but I sorta doubt it. I base his inability to make the shots from just my own experience with shooting ( Shot expert for 6 years in the US Army) and no matter how much of a POS the gun was ( and it really was a crappy firearm) I could not have made the shot(s) and if I couldn't have done so only an Olympic level shooter ( or sniper) could have. ( again especially with that POS rifle)
So While i do not know or feel I have factual evidence on who killed JFK. i do feel I know enough to know that it was NOT a "lone gunman" who did it and that means there is a coverup of who was involved.

Yup and the most popular when it comes to conspiracy
See the key to me on your question as it relates to JFK is found in the definition of Conspiracy which is : a secret plan made by two or more people to do something that is harmful or illegal( Websters). So a conspiracy involves "two or more people" to do "harmful or illegal". In relationship to JFK the whole premise of a "Lone Nut/Gunman" excludes a conspiracy singe it is a single person. That's been the key debate topic since 1963. Personally I cannot see a single person doing this with all the extraneous evidence that's come to light since then. Not that I fall into finger pointing based on it but A general hypothesis can be made for there NOT being a lone person involved AND that whomever else was involved was a member(s) of the US Government.
WHO they are and why , ETC is still unproven no matter how many would like o force feed me " the truth" ( still think the movie as petty good too) and since it IS the government there will not be any proof ( it does exist one way o another) known for at least another 50ish years or later since if it was as the hypothesis postulates then the government since that moment has been illegal and amounts to a coup.
JFK aide one of my personal fav's is the death of Gen. Patton. such a "convenient" demise in place and time with much unknown is a very fertile ground to speculate upon.

Th government was set to release information about it and then pushed it back. Why do you think that is?

:iconeric-was-here:

Truthfully? I think because the info that would be released would show ( or lead) to the conclusion that the present government is illegitimate and the assassination was a Coup d'état by other parts within the government and those who would be implicated are the patrons of people in office present day.
